Similar in size to the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Audi Q3 slots in below the Q7 and Q5 in Audi’s crossover-line. With the small-crossover segment exploding in popularity, it was only a matter of time before Audi brought a competitor for the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA to the US market. The 2016 Q3 2.0T quattro Tiptronic we tested, like many Audi’s of the last decade, is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine sending its thrust to all four wheels. While this powertrain makes for sprightly performance in the A4 and A3 models, the heavier Q3 feels unhurried off the line.

However, the 2016 Q3 does possess many of the virtues of recent Audi products, including the excellent MMI infotainment system, a handsome and well-designed cabin, and great ergonomics. For a crossover, the Q3 handles reasonably well, though we found that its Volkswagen Tiguan cousin was oddly quicker and sportier.

While it may lack the performance of the BMW X1 xDrive 2.8i, the Audi Q3 sets a high standard for refinement and luxury in this class, with a more high-quality feel than either its BMW or Mercedes competitors.
