The midsize Bavarian SUV gets an eco-friendly boost for 2016 in the form of the new plug-in hybrid BMW X5 xDrive40e. The name may be a mouthful, but the fuel savings from this hybrid behemoth should more than make up for any awkward syntax. With more cars, crossovers and SUVs sporting plugs these days, BMW plans to have an electrified version of each of its model lines soon.

The X5 xDrive40e uses a 111-horsepower electric motor integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission that sits behind the 4-cylinder turbocharged gas engine. All-wheel-drive is standard, and the hybrid powertrain makes a total of 309 horsepower, enough to get this 5,000-lb SUV to 60 mph in a claimed 6.8 seconds.

The 2016 X5 xDrive40e does feel pretty quick, and in the city it gets off the line nicely thanks to the electric motor’s immediate, even stream of torque. The X5 offers three different powertrain modes along with three different chassis modes as well. You can set the hybrid system to “Auto eDrive,” “Save Battery” or “Max eDrive.” Max eDrive, another odd name choice, allows you to hum around town on electric power only, at least until the batteries run out. In this way it’s possible to drive up to 20 miles at moderate speeds or achieve a maximum speed of 75 mph. Above that, the 2.0-liter gas engine kicks in automatically and will in theory get the X5 xDrive40e all the way up to a governed 130-mph top speed, if you can find an Autobahn nearby on which to try it.

But for most owners stateside, the new plug-in hybrid X5 will rarely see such shenanigans. Whether you're taking your dogs to the park, taking the kids to soccer practice, or even just going about your general errand duties in the city, this vehicle does a seamless job of integrating utility and efficiency. Expect to see about 18.8 mpg combined without using the plug (from our test drive), or up to 54 mpge if you’re diligent about charging it. If you’re the kind of person who remembers to charge their phone every night, extending that sort of behavior to your car will reward you with huge fuel savings in the case of the 2016 X5 xDrive40e. Unlike your phone, though, the BMW will still work if you don’t plug it in. It will also still play your music and show you a map of the local traffic.
