The hot-rod version of Cadillac’s much-praised ATS goes head-to-head with the BMW M4 and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. Powered by a 464-horsepower twin-turbo V6, this luxury grand tourer has the moves to match its chiseled looks.

Love it or hate it, Cadillac has clung steadfastly to its “Art and Science” design theme, using planar, straight edges and sharp creases all over. On the ATS Coupe, the style works, even if it winds up looking less like a stealth powerboat and more like somebody’s impression of an Origami car. The ATS-V adds a few extra spoilers and vents, but nothing too outlandish. Unlike with the BMW M4 and M3, one glance may not be enough to tell an ATS-V from its lesser siblings. The ATS-V has good proportions, and sharp-eyed auto enthusiasts will be able to identify one by its mesh grilles, quad tailpipes or suspiciously wide rear tires. That, or how quickly it pulls away at a stop light.

Reaching 60 mph in as little as 4.2 seconds, or a full second faster than a regular ATS Coupe, the twin-turbo ATS-V is a serious player in the luxury performance car game. It’s braking and handling numbers are right up there with those of the M4 and M3 as well, with the Cadillac ATS-V able to stop from 60 in just over 100 feet and pull about .97 G’s of lateral force from its sticky, summer tires. Whether you prefer the driving experience is, at this level, mostly subjective. As it’s not a dedicated race-car with number and livery, the feeling the ATS-V coupe imparts to its drivers is at least as important as its track numbers.

Thanks to its precise, firm and honest 6-speed manual transmission, the ATS-V we tested will appeal to those who consider themselves driving purists more than brand purists. Its price point is within a stone’s throw of the M4 and undercuts the AMG  C-Class and upcoming Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio by a few grand.

Since Cadillac introduced its first CTS-V model over ten years ago, the brand has been trying to establish itself as a credible name in the high performance luxury car scene. With the 2016 ATS-V, there is no longer any doubt that GM can make a true rival to the storied M3 and M4.
