The 2016 Cadillac CTS-V Sedan RWD is one of GAYOT's Top 10 Luxury Sedans and GAYOT's Top 10 Family Sedans

Do you want to know what it feels like to be shot out of a canon? Then take a ride in our red obsession tintcoat 2016 Cadillac CTS-V.

Picture Don Draper, floating along the PA Turnpike in his Cadillac De Ville. Big, boatlike and luxurious, with acres of chrome and a wide bench seat, this was the pinnacle of American luxury, an indulgent car for an elegant time. This is, still, what the name Cadillac means for most people. A luxurious couch on wheels.

Except the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V has almost nothing in common with a couch. From the grippy suede bucket seats to the rumble of the 640-horsepower supercharged V8 engine it shares with the Corvette Z06, the CTS-V is a whole new kind of Cadillac. Moreover, it’s an American car that runs near the top of the class of best engineered and fastest sedans ever built. More at home on the Autobahn or the Nürburgring than any relaxed, 65-mph American freeway, the CTS-V is a car for the America of Dreams, a car for bedroom wall posters and wild aspirations.

But how does it actually drive? We’ve all heard the hype about today’s 500+ horsepower cars, some of which, burdened by near 3-ton curb weights, numb power steering and vague automatic transmissions, are about as fun to drive as a big rig. Thank GM’s fanatical performance engineers that this is not at all the case with the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V. Fresh off their success with the 7th generation Corvette and the well-regarded Cadillac ATS sport sedan, they’ve crafted a 'bahn-burner that’s truly fun to drive. More like the original BMW M5 in spirt than anything you can buy on a showroom floor (including a BMW showroom) the CTS-V lets you feel all the right vibes through the steering wheel, pedals and supportive seats. It corners flat without riding harshly, thanks to the ingenious magnetorheological shocks and a well-tuned suspension. Huge Brembo brakes and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires assure that the 2016 CTS-V turns and stops as well as it goes. And man, does it go!

The CTS-V finishes the quarter mile in 11.8 seconds at 124 mph, nearly on a par with the ridiculous 707-horsepower Dodge Charger Hellcat, and way ahead of the current AMG and M competition. 0-60 goes by in a Ferrari-baiting 3.6 seconds, on the way to a top speed claimed to be above 200. General Motors and the UAW have built us one seriously fast sedan.

And yet, for all its impressive track potential, Don Draper probably wouldn’t hate cruising to California in this Cadillac too much either. While the CTS-V lacks the graceful fins of its distant De Ville ancestors, the “Art & Science” design aesthetic does give the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V a smooth and sharp look, kind of like a creased, slim fit Tom Ford suit. The 8-speed automatic transmission is seamless in daily driving, and while its 14 mpg city/ 21 mpg highway rating won’t be winning it any Green Car of the Year awards, it does drink a lot less unleaded than a 1962 Sedan De Ville. The 2016 Cadillac CTS-V also beats the economy figure of anything in its speed category. This is definitely a vehicle for the happy few, in more ways than one.
