The Chevrolet Suburban enters its 12th generation for 2015. The redesign keeps the premise of the long-running SUV totally intact, like a faithful sequel in the Rambo or Rocky franchises. Sylvester Stalone will not be leaving the building. The Suburban will not be shrinking or turning into a Prius.

The Suburban 4WD 1/2 Ton LT we tested came with GM’s tried-and-true 5.3-liter V8. At 355 horsepower it’s no Saturn rocket, but it does a reasonable job at getting the barn-like Suburban up to speed. 0-60 comes up in just over 7 seconds, with the quarter mile mark passing in 15 flat. Gas mileage, never a serious selling point for giant SUVs, is improved slightly for 2015, with EPA ratings going up to 15 mpg city/22 highway. Refinement is improved as well, and it seems that each generation of Suburban gets a little bit more like the Cadillac Escalade.

At an MSRP of $63,035, it should offer a few creature comforts. Power folding second and third row seats, a power lift gate, and GM’s MyLink infotainment system are all available. The Suburban LT seats, steering wheel, and most surfaces feature pretty decent leather, and the stereo sounds good, abetted by the cathedral-like interior space. If the Suburban isn’t sybaritic enough, there is of course the Escalade to consider.

Families living out in, well, the suburbs, are probably this SUV’s main demographic. If the roads are wide enough and the traffic sparse enough, they won’t mind the Chevy Suburban’s 43-foot turning radius or 19-foot length. If, however, you need to regularly parallel park, you might want to consider some of the smaller SUVs on the market. Volvo’s new XC90 is a little bit steeper in price, but even more luxurious, and Chevy’s own Tahoe is essentially a shortened Suburban.
