With only minor changes for 2014, the car that helped redefine the compact segment remains a compelling choice. The Ford Focus Titanium features up-to-date infotainment and safety features, handsome styling, and an efficient 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. The current-generation Focus was also one of the first mainstream small cars to feature a dual-clutch automated manual transmission, although it was never as smooth as similar gearboxes from Volkswagen. However, we applaud Ford for putting such high-tech features in a relatively low-cost volume model.

We also applaud Ford for not dumbing down the Focus' handling. Tuned by the European arm of the company, the Focus handles the road in a way that is reminiscent of a Volkswagen GTI. Turn-in is crisp, the steering is nicely weighted and the car hangs on impressively, with the Titanium model's summer tires providing up to .90 G of grip on a skidpad.

We were never the biggest fans of Ford's interior styling on the Focus, and now that the design is entering its third year, it's looking distinctly dated. The audio and climate controls are not the easiest to reach, and the center of the dashboard bears an uncanny resemblance to the face of a Transformer.

The seats in our Ruby Red test car were comfortable, however, with actual leather trim — a rarity in this class. The Focus has definitely kept pace with its competition in terms of features and dynamics, even if it is no longer as revolutionary as it was back in 2012.
