The 2015 Ford Edge Sport AWD is one of GAYOT's Top 10 Value Cars

Slotted in Ford’s lineup somewhere between the Explorer SUV and the Escape compact SUV, the 2015 Ford Edge Sport aims to woo buyers looking for a sportier, more driver-focused alternative to crossovers and SUVs. With its “sports car for the whole family” vibe, the Edge Sport is decked out with 21-inch wheels shod in Pirelli all-season tires, a low, muscular stance and sharp, handsome styling that sets it apart from its more bulbous rivals.

To keep up with the “sport” portion of the Ford Edge Sport’s name, a wonderfully-powerful 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 is offered, along with all-wheel drive. This combination is enough to hustle the 4400-lb crossover to 60 mph in less than six seconds. Unfortunately for those hoping this family car would rock as hard as its namesake, the guitarist of U2, the chassis is tuned for highway cruising, not backroads dancing. It soaks up bumps and stays quiet at speed, but doesn’t beg to be tossed into hairpin curves or delight in corkscrew onramps.

Still, at around $40,000 for the turbocharged V6, all-wheel-drive model, the 2015 Ford Edge is a compelling alternative to luxury and premium crossovers from the likes of Audi and Mercedes-Benz. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine, especially, is as smooth and potent as anything to come out of Stuttgart or Munich. Somewhere between an Explorer and and Escape in size, the Ford Edge turns out to belong to an entirely different genre. Not hard rock but a power ballad, blending spacious accommodations with effortless highway acceleration and a reasonable cargo hold.
