The first time Honda entered the pickup truck segment, it did so with a funky-looking midsize offering called the Ridgeline. The 2017 model, which is the second generation of the pickup sees the Ridgeline name return with a new, handsome exterior that helps the truck stick out of a once barren segment. The awkward angles that plagued the previous generation are gone, replaced with cleaner, more sophisticated lines. While looks are subjective, the Ridgeline RT looks like a car on stilts – not exactly a bad thing.

The grown-up approach carries on inside where the pickup truck mimics the Honda Pilot. The dashboard on the Ridgeline RT is dominated by a five-inch LCD screen, which is replaced by a larger 8-inch display on higher models. The interior touches are high-end and well above the industry standard for midsize pickup trucks. And the driving position is car-like with the driver sitting low inside the vehicle. The interior is a nice place to be, especially for a truck.

But the Ridgeline RT is a pickup truck. And at the end of the day, it needs to be able to do pickup-truck-like tasks. This is where the Ridgeline shows its strengths and its weaknesses. Thanks to a 3.5-liter V6 engine that generates 280 horsepower, the pickup’s rated to carry 1,499 pounds of payload in its bed, which is better than the majority of the competition. Its towing capacity, though, which is at 5,000 pounds, lags behind some other trucks.

What the Ridgeline RT lacks in brute strength, it makes up with its car-like qualities. The truck rides, handles, and sips gas like a large car. And there are various little touches that make the pickup easier to use than traditional trucks, like the two-way tailgate and trunk underneath the truck bed. The interior also has some hidden goodies, including the hidden space underneath the rear-seat cushion, which help the Ridgeline’s claim of having the best-in-class interior storage.
