The rather large, decently powerful Hyundai Genesis Coupe has evolved and improved greatly since its introduction back in the 2010 model year, but still lacks refinement.

Not quite a muscle car, not quite a grand tourer, this sports coupe seems designed to appeal to the "Fast & Furious" crowd, which seems like a bit of a branding missed-opportunity for Hyundai, especially considering the well-received Genesis Sedan, a luxury car that goes head-to-head with the BMW 5 Series. But, rather than seeming like a junior Genesis Sedan, the coupe gets its own mission. With a relatively low price, rear-wheel drive, decent power and plenty of hood vents, diffusers and spoilers, the Genesis Coupe looks great on paper.

Though the Genesis Coupe 3.8 Ultimate we tested accelerates and performs well, it could definitely use some refinement. The direct-injected V6, for example, provides lots of thrust, but sounds thrashy at higher RPMs. The steering has the right amount of weight but lacks on-center feel, making it less intuitive to find the perfect line through a turn.

We did find that the Hyundai's infotainment system was simple but intuitive. Bluetooth phone connectivity is fast and easy to use, and though we rarely end up relying on a car's built-in navigation, the blueLink system the Genesis coupe uses works well enough.
