Now with more conservative and arguably cleaner styling, the refreshed 2015 Hyundai Sonata aims for refinement and overall competence. No longer the radical upstart that its predecessor was, the Sonata is now more at home in the midsize sedan segment.

We found the new styling to be an improvement, losing the jellybean quality of the previous generation Sonata. The 2015 Hyundai Sonata now shares the design language of the 2015 Genesis -- Hyundai calls it "Fluidic Motion." It gives the midsized car an overall upscale appearance, the creased centerline, canted roof and LED headlights in particular calling to mind Audi sedans and BMW's "Gran Tourismo" models, though without quite copying any one of them.

The same sort of upmarket competence carries over to the Hyundai Sonata's interior. Materials in the Limited model we tested felt on a par with the class for quality. Feature content, long one of Hyundai's strengths, is outstanding. Our test car, equipped with the optional tech package and "ultimate" package included smart cruise control with full-stop, lane-departure and forward collision warning, park assist, a panoramic sunroof and a 400-watt Infinity stereo. Luxury-sedan kit, in other words. Add to that list the fact that Hyundai's infotainment system is one of the easiest-to-learn in the business, and the Sonata Limited starts to look like a good value.

While Hyundai has done well with luxury amenities, in recent years they have still been a bit behind when it came to driving dynamics. The 2015 Sonata is a big step forward, however, with a stiffer chassis and better ride/handling balance. While the Sonata is still no sports sedan, body motions now feel more controlled and there is less banging and crashing over bumps. The suspension also doesn't bottom-out as easily on dips.

The 2015 Hyundai Sonata benefits from pleasant steering, a smooth, unobtrusive transmission and generally good cabin ergonomics, which should go a long way to make up for the few areas, such as engine sound and driving involvement, where Hyundai's midsize sedan still needs refinement.
