The 2016 Jaguar F-TYPE S Coupe Manual is one of GAYOT's Top 10 Fun-to-Drive Cars

Let's face it, automobiles with manual transmissions are dying. Read on to see what the 2016 Jaguar F-TYPE S Coupe Manual has in store for you.

Over 90% of the cars sold today in America have an 'app' to change gears. And with each release of the app, the process gets better: faster, smoother and more efficient. At its introduction, Jaguar’s new F-TYPE sports car impressed with its looks and power but for it to offer a true purist’s driving experience, one thing was missing: a clutch pedal. Now they’ve fixed that omission, and we get to drive the supposed successor to the legendary E-TYPE the way sports cars were always meant to be driven, that is, manually.

The shifter is crisp and positive. It feels substantial but not heavy like some (ah hem, Corvette) shifters in high-powered cars. The clutch is smooth but a little vague, like a BMW’s. With its aluminum body and stiff chassis, the F-TYPE handles well. The ride is taut and controlled and you’ll have to pitch the car into a corner really hard in order to upset the tires’ grip. But if you get on the gas early in the 380-horsepower supercharged V6 F-Type S, the rear will want to step out and come around. Turn off the traction and stability controls and you’ll have a tempting, if sometimes scary, dance partner.

Overall, the manual transmission, while not a perfect example of the genre, is a welcome option for what’s supposed to be a pure and traditional sports car. After all, if you want a tech-happy track monster, you can always go buy a Cayman GT4 with the lighting-fast twin clutch transmission. Jaguar is betting that its buyers are in it more for the journey than the time slip. That’s why the manual is a great choice. Now go find some open road and push it as much as you can, as it is where this sports car excels.

Our 2016 Jaguar F-TYPE S Coupe Manual tester came with a bunch of options, $13,000 worth of them, including its dark sapphire exterior color, 20 inch Tornado alloy wheels, power tailgate, an extended leather package etc. Cargo space is decent but interior cabin remains limited, unlike the currently retired XK model.
