With its trademark Jeep styling, round-headlights and upright grille, the 2016 Jeep Renegade extends Jeep’s brand into the trendy small crossover segment.  It's a platform-mate of the Fiat 500X, where it will compete against the likes of the Chevy Trax, Honda HR-V and Mini Countryman.

The Jeep Renegade is available in front or four-wheel drive, with a pair of engines that also see duty in the Dodge Dart line. These are the 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder or a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder. The larger engine only comes with Chrysler’s 9-speed automatic and is supposed to get over 30 mpg on the highway, though in our tests we saw mpg only in the low 20s. Driving around town, the Jeep Renegade 4x4 felt smaller than it is. Visibility is good and the steering is surprisingly pleasant for a crossover. Still, it’s more of an off-roader than a canyon-carver, and rolls heavily in faster turns.

We found the Jeep Renegade’s interior to be full of thoughtful details, as well as some cheesy ones. The center console features a topographical map of Moab, for instance, and the tachometer’s redline, instead of being a simple red-stripe, is a picture of orange flames.
