2015 Lincoln MKC Black Label AWD

The Black Label Society. 5-passenger luxury crossover.

While its name may sound more like it should be for a high end whiskey than a car, the 2015 Lincoln MKC Black Label AWD is a capable, efficient and luxurious crossover. As smooth as top-shelf bourbon, the MKC is a distinguished performer, thanks to a 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-4 shared with the Mustang EcoBoost and the upcoming high performance Ford Focus RS. In the Lincoln it makes 285 horsepower and a stout 305 lb-ft of torque, enough to send this handsome crossover to sixty in under seven seconds and to enable it to scoot through suburban traffic with ease.

The MKC has never been the most spacious of crossovers, but the Black Label version makes up for a shallow-ish cargo area with high-quality leather, four comfortable seats and a decent driving position. The infotainment system, based on an updated version of Ford Sync, is much improved over the earlier Ford and Lincoln phone pairing set ups. Standard safety equipment includes front, side, driver’s knee and curtain airbags, while a blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert are optional. A programable key called MyKey is also standard, allowing you to set parameters for multiple users, such as speed limits and area restrictions, seemingly designed for the parents of grounded teens.

The 2015 Lincoln MKC Black Label has an interior design that is very unique. The gear selector takes the form of a group of buttons on the dash instead of a column or floor-mounted shifter. This frees up space for a handy storage bin next to the cup holders.

Overall, the MKC Black Label is a fine choice if your priorities for a crossover are feature content and interior quality. It may be based on a Ford Escape chassis, but the leather is of a higher grade than most German luxury cars offer, and the 2.3-liter turbo engine is reasonably efficient considering its power output. Key competitors include the BMW X1 and X3 and the Mercedes Benz GLA-class crossovers. If you’re after maximum canyon-carving performance in your crossover, you may want to check out the X1 sDrive 35i which gets a turbocharged inline-6 but doesn't match the real world fuel economy of the MKC. The GLA45 AMG from Mercedes Benz is even quicker, but also comes in at a different price point entirely.
