Coming off a refresh for the 2015 model year, the giant-size Lincoln Navigator carries on for 2016 with the same truck-based chassis of the previous generation Ford F-150 but now comes with a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine to shrink its carbon footprint a little compared with earlier gas-guzzling V8 iterations of the largest Lincoln.

If you like your luxury SUVs much as they came in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Lincoln Navigator is one of your best bets. Slightly smaller and less expensive than the also-truck-based Cadillac Escalade, this large SUV preserves the high-seating position, commanding view and roly-poly cornering attitude of its truck ancestors. But this lumbering mammoth of the car world remains both luxurious and useful. In an age of three-row crossovers based on stretched small-car platforms, the Navigator carries on with a chassis actually appropriate to its size. This isn’t great news for weight savings or fuel economy, but it does provide extra capability in terms of towing and off-roading that you can’t find in a crossover or car-based SUV. With the V6 generating 460 lb-ft of torque, a 9000-lb towing capacity makes the Navigator a great choice if you use your luxury SUV to tow your boat.

In terms of standard luxury features, the 2016 Lincoln Navigator gets an upgraded audio and infotainment system. Sync 3, as it’s called, is powered by BlackBerry and should be a big improvement over the finicky and frustrating systems Ford was using previous model years. Our ruby red Navigator can with masterful THX II audio system, rain-sensing wipers, HID headlamps and power deploy running board to mention a few interesting attributes.

The Navigator’s main competition, of course, comes from its crosstown rival the Cadillac Escalade. The Escalade benefits from a more recent redesign and offers a few more features, like adaptive cruise control, that the Navigator will likely get in 2017. The next generation Navigator is rumored to be built on an aluminum chassis, like the Ford F150, which should be great for stiffness and weight savings.
