A fun-to-drive 4-door sports sedan for going out with a bang.

The last in a long-line of turbocharged all-wheel-drive sedans from Mitsubishi, the 2015 Evo GSR doesn’t go out with a bang so much as fade away into the Grand Turismo, rally-car inspired fantasies from which it came. Now that Mitsubishi is officially focusing on crossovers, which net a greater profit margin, and eco-friendly runabouts, which create a more modern corporate image, the Evo will join the ranks of cars like the Mazda RX-7, Toyota MR-2, Acura Integra Type-R and Mitsubishi’s own 3000GT, cars that live on in tuner imaginations long after they have departed from showrooms.

Though the Evo is a blast to drive quickly, with a sophisticated all-wheel drive system and a punchy, 291-horsepower turbocharged engine conspiring to shove you back in your seat and send you reeling from corner to corner. Thanks to its willingness to be chucked into turns with ridiculous momentum, the Evo GSR feels even faster than it is. The Evo has always been perhaps the most roller-coaster-like of cars, and this last model is no exception. While other fast cars may require some finesse, some “slow-in, fast-out” driving school know-how to make the most of their performance, the Evo seems content to be thrown casually from apex to apex, its computerized all-wheel-drive system and limited-slip differentials doing their best to make it feel like the road has invisible walls on either end.

Mitsubishi flattered Evo buyers in good faith, installing pass-throughs in the seats for track-mandated 5-point harnesses. The truth is, though, if you are not headed for the track, you may find that daily life with the Evo causes the fantasy to wear thin. For a $35,000 car, the Mitsubishi Evo GSR has a very harsh ride, a cheap-feeling interior, and an image tarnished by its association with boy-racer immaturity. Ultimately, this image is what probably killed the Evo.

Though it’s undoubtedly a better drivers’ car than its main rival, the Subaru WRX/ STi, the Evo simply has a douchier image. And it costs more, as well, though with flagging sales, Mitsubishi dealers may be offering discounts. So if you believe a truly great drivers’ car can shake off its troglodyte reputation, and if your sense of self is strong enough to resist the inevitable snickers from hipsters or invitations to race from combative Subie drivers, pick one of these up while you still can.
