The 2016 Nissan Maxima Platinum is one of GAYOT'S Top 10 Best New Cars and GAYOT's Top 10 Family Sedans

The Tennessee-built 2016 Maxima hits the scene with daring new styling and some chassis and powertrain tweaks, too. It remains a front-wheel-drive 4-door sedan powered by Nissan’s VQ35 V6. The only transmission choice is a CVT made by Jatco, but the CVT has been retuned to deliver more of the feel of a traditional automatic. The gear ratio spread has been broadened as well to give the new 2016 Maxima better highway fuel economy. It’s now rated at 30 mpg on the highway, an improvement of 4 mpg over the outgoing model. 0-60 mph happens in a hair under six seconds, with the quarter mile passing in about 14.4 seconds.

Though billed as a “4-door sports car,” the Maxima actually does a better job at being a luxury cruiser. The chassis soaks up bumps well and the interior is both spacious and comfortable for four. Despite having to send the V6’s 300 horsepower to the front wheels, the Maxima handles decently as well, with little torque steer except at low speeds. Even without the 19” wheels and optional sport suspension that comes on the SR model, the 2016 Maxima we drove handled well for its class.

A long list of bells and whistles are available, and a 7" screen with navigation is standard. All Maximas also come with acoustically-laminated glass and a number of noise-isolating elements in the oil pan and engine mounts. This adds up to an extremely quiet road-going experience, even at full throttle. While the exterior styling of the new Maxima can be polarizing, the interior is much more restrained and generally very well-designed, too.

Our coulis red [think raspberry] with charcoal read 4DSC, luxury and sport car wannabe gave us plenty of cooperation for daily commuting, although its size couldn't be ignored in tight spots, and on a weekend getaway. With a cargo-happy trunk and good interior space, this sedan works for the entire family. The 2016 Nissan Maxima Platinum is loaded with electronics for safety and convenience -- and the price tells the story, topping at $41,000.

Warranty/Service: 36-month/36,000-mile limited vehicle coverage, 5-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain coverage, 10-year /120,000 mile CVT limited warranty extension.
