The 2015 Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid is one of GAYOT's Top 10 Hybrid Cars

The new plug-in hybrid form of Porsche's ultra-luxurious 4-door sports car adds high-tech bragging rights, eco-friendliness, weight and complexity.

The Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid is able to travel up to 22 miles and reach 84 mph on electric power alone, thanks to its revised 9.4 kWh lithium ion battery pack. Once the supercharged gasoline V6 fires up to help, the Panamera S E-Hybrid can accelerate from 0-60 in about 5.2 seconds and keep going to a top speed of over 160 mph.

While this luxury hybrid is by no means slow, neither is it a lithe corner-carving sports car. It performs well but its weight robs it of the immediacy and feel that we expect from a $130,000 Porsche. Body roll is apparent, and even in sport plus mode there can be a small but disconcerting delay when powering out of corners, as the hybrid powertrain switches over. Braking comes with a jerkiness we now expect in hybrids, even if it is a little disappointing in a six-figure hybrid like this one. Steering is quick, but feels overboosted and overly light, lacking some of the tactile feedback which used to be the hallmark of a Porsche.

We did enjoy the sound of the supercharged V6, however, as its playful rumble gives a nice Jekyll/Hyde type contrast with the near silence of the Panamera when running in EV mode.

Speaking of EV mode, we were able to drive around neighborhood streets — the kind with frequent stop signs which ruin gas mileage for non-hybrid cars — using only electricity, which helped our Panamera reach a 24.3 mpg city average. Not Prius territory, but this is also a nearly 5,000-pound Porsche that has to be able to reach 60 in 5.2 seconds.

Inside, the Panamera S E-Hybrid treats drivers to a sumptuous cocoon of real leather, ventilated seats, and numerous settings for climate control and entertainment. Our Yachting Blue Metallic test car came equipped with the optional park assist feature, which sends a live feed from the corners of the car to the dash screen in order to help guide the electrified vehicle into your chosen parking spot.

The instrumentation is laudable for its thoroughness, even if a few of the choices are a little eccentric. To the left of the large, familiar analog tachometer is a percent power-usage gauge instead of the more conventional "MPG" gauges found in many German cars since the 1970s. This gauge lets the driver know if the Panamera's hybrid system is active, charging or "ready," and, at the top end, whether the V6 engine is running under "boost," which, confusingly, doesn't refer to air pressure from the supercharger at all, but rather to electric assist. The Panamera E-Hybrid has no conventional vacuum/boost gauge.

We liked the option of seeing the navigation display in a multifunction digital gauge to the right of the tachometer. This makes it easy to see traffic information and upcoming directions without taking your eyes far off the road.

The Panamera S E-Hybrid we tested is undeniably a great example of technological progress. It's comfortable, luxurious and gorgeous inside, with some of the highest quality materials of any Porsche. It is also less fun to drive than a 968 from twenty years ago. Brand purists may lament this car's eco posh mission and overboosted steering, and their complaints certainly have merit.

Fortunately for the sports car faithful, Porsche still makes the Cayman, Boxster and 911. That is not what this is. What the Panamera S E-Hybrid does represent is a company willing to take risks in the name of innovation and put its supercar technology into a practical road car. Now if only they could make the steering feel like it should in a real Porsche...
