The 2016 Porsche 911 Targa 4 is one of GAYOT's Top 10 New Cars.

Bringing back a name and a style dormant since 1993, the new 2016 Porsche Targa harkens back to original air-cooled 911s in style but bears resolutely modern mechanical underpinnings. That means this elegant pop-top sports coupe should have the kind of blistering performance we’ve come to expect from modern Porsches.

Dynamically, it’s difficult to fault any recent Porsche sports car, from the lithe Boxster all the way to the track-ready Carrera GTS models. If anything, these cars drive so well that they make the driver wonder if their skill even matters. The 2016 911 Targa is no exception; it corners with a grace and sheer tenacity of grip that belies its still-illogical rear engine placement. Its 350-horsepower direct-injected flat 6 gets this 911 to 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds and down the quarter mile in just under 13 seconds, though trying that with the roof off may add a few tenths.

In more relaxed settings, the 911 Targa 4 is docile as any Audi; the top raises or lowers in about 19 seconds, though you must be at full stop for it to do so. Porsche engineers shaved every possible ounce off the roof mechanism, with the result that it adds barely 75 pounds to the car’s weight.

The engineers also tried to reduce the wind buffeting effect of driving at speed with the roof off. To that end, you can adjust the spoiler on the windshield’s header to divert air over and away from the passenger compartment, though this adds some mild higher-pitched wind noise, it takes away the hammering, thumping vibrations that some drop-tops suffer at freeway speeds.

Overall, it’s clear the 2016 911 Targa 4 was designed to be beautiful, not practical. Still, it’s a Porsche, made by a company that long has prided itself on delivering sports cars that are more livable than their Italian and British exotic rivals. A definite showpiece, the 2016 911 Targa 4 is nonetheless a fine daily driver, as long as it’s $108,000+ base price doesn’t deter you.
