Rolls-Royce

Labeled the "best car in the world" in 1908 by a journalist writing for The Times in London, Rolls-Royce is still viewed with much the same reverence by auto enthusiasts over 100 years later. Founded in 1904 by Henry Royce and Charles Rolls, the famed British badge expressed an early interest in improving engine design and increasing horsepower — the first collaboration between Rolls and Royce was a 10hp 2-cylinder; today's V12-powered models easily break into the 400-500hp range. After a foray into jet engine design and a period of financial hardship resulting in the nationalization of the company, today Rolls-Royce is owned by BMW, who has imbued the English icon with its own brand of high-performance German engineering.
