The 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia is one of GAYOT's Top 10 Luxury Sedans

Though Alfa Romeo made its triumphant return to the United States with the exotic, ultra-niche 4C roadster, the upcoming Giulia sedan is a much bigger deal for the company. First teased in top-level Quadrifoglio trim, the 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia is one of the most hotly anticipated cars of the year. If all goes according to plan, it will revolutionize the compact luxury segment and show the US that Italian car cachet and passion can be had in a practical, reliable 4-door sedan, not just in roadsters and quirky hatchbacks.

The Giulia Quadrifoglio is priced in the $70,000 range and competes directly with the BMW M3 and M4 and Cadillac’s ATS-V. Well-heeled sports car aficionados might also cross shop the Quadrifoglio with Porsche 911s and Chevrolet Corvettes. According to the information Alfa Romeo has released, the Giulia Guadrifoglio has ridiculous performance numbers. Using a Ferrari-developed 2.9-liter twin turbo V6 with 505 horsepower, it’s said to reach 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, which puts it ahead of the current Porsche 911 Carrera.

Base Giulias has a 276-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 driving the rear wheels, and are projected to match the current BMW 328i’s performance. If they manage to outdo BMW in terms of driving involvement while keeping close to the 328i’s price point, the Alfa Romeo might just shoot to the top in a very competitive segment.

Indeed, criticisms of the current generation BMW 3-series might just be the best reason the Giulia has for being offered in the US. Ever since its 2012 debut, enthusiast drivers have found the 3-series to be less tactile and slightly less-driver focused than its predecessor. Even though the “F30” as it’s known in BMW-speak, was a step up in terms of performance, efficiency and luxury, it was no more fun to drive than the out-going E90 3-series.

If the 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia can fill the E90s shoes as a true 4-door drivers’ car, it will definitely be an enthusiast’s favorite. The only question for the Fiat Chrysler, Alfa’s parent company, is whether there are enough driving enthusiasts left in the US to make the car turn a profit.
