Few vehicles on the road have the same off-roading capability as the Wrangler, with the Unlimited Rubicon adding room for five and a more spacious interior.

Looking at the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon’s exterior may bring up some mixed emotions. Why is it so boxy? Why does it come with a soft top? Where are all the frilly exterior features? Truth is, the Wrangler hasn’t changed much since its inception in 1986. But that isn’t a bad thing.

The Wrangler has always been a go-anywhere type of SUV and the 2017 model still follows the same motto. To that end, the SUV’s body-on-frame construction, underbody skid plates, short wheelbase, and impressive ground clearance all ensure the Wrangler can do it all. That said, the interior still sports an excessive amount of plastic. While not the most comfortable place to be on a regular basis, a hard day of off-roading can be hosed off.

Make no mistake, the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon is a terrible city car and a lackluster highway cruiser. The items that make the SUV incredible on trails results in a jostling ride on everyday roads. There’s minimal sound deadening, which provides for a noisy ride, the SUV’s height makes it jiggle and floppy in corners, and large bumps can send judders through the entire chassis.

Turn off a paved road and things take a turn for the better, as the Wrangler’s 44.3-degree angle approach, 25.4-degree breakover and 40.4-degree departure can get drivers up incredibly tough terrain. And when in a sticky situation, the 3.6-liter V6 answers the call with an ample amount of grunt.

Those willing to overlook the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon’s faults and use it as an everyday SUV will find some creature comforts. The four-door SUV is capable of holding 70.6 cu. ft. of cargo when the rear seats are folded and 31.5 cu. ft. with them up. Power windows and door locks come as standard – yes, those are optional extras on lower models – and a 115-volt auxiliary power outlet.
