The 2017 Buick LaCrosse is one of GAYOT's Top 10 Family Sedans

Redesigned for 2017, the Buick LaCrosse gets a new chassis claimed to be both lighter and stiffer than before. It also benefits from a new direct-injected V6 engine with lots of efficiency-minded features like automatic stop-start and cylinder deactivation. The new LaCrosse is less awkward looking than before, with a more flowing profile and taller greenhouse. The more aggressive front end looks modern and handsome, reminiscent of the Volvo S60.

The 2017 LaCrosse seems like it will be a credible contender in the midsize near luxury segment. It’s full of convenience and quietness features, and now adds more tech as well, like an available teen-driver mode that lets parents see a “report card” of how the car was driven.

Buick will offer the LaCrosse with either front or all-wheel drive, and the only transmission available is an 8-speed automatic with Buick’s electronic precision shift feature. All-wheel-drive versions of the 2017 LaCrosse have a new clutch-based torque-vectoring system that promises to better maintain grip on slippery surfaces.

We road-tested the new LaCrosse and were blown away by the transformation of Buick’s flagship mid-sized sedan into a true premium luxury car. Yes, the 2017 Buick LaCrosse is now a stiff competitor in the mid-sized luxury market with its stylish chrome-accented exterior, exceedingly sumptuous and ergonomic interior, loads of mobile-based infotainment apps, integrated advanced safety tech, powerful acceleration (from the fuel efficient 3.6-liter V6) and incredible handling.

While the previous generation Buick LaCrosse was a comfortable, solid near-luxury cruiser, it wasn’t the most exciting car in its class and didn’t offer much in the way of driver involvement. The 2017 model is definitely more innovative, and should be sportier as well, making it more of a competitor to the likes of the Acura TLX and Lincoln MKZ.
