While Dogfish Head is renowned for its innovation of continually hopping its IPAs, it has also distinguished itself as a major producer of beers with non-traditional exotic ingredients.
The brewery doesn't just dabble, it thrives with bold concoctions. Its motto "off-centered stuff for off-centered people" attests to Dogfish Head's thirst for individuality. Midas Touch is a modern adaptation of residue discovered on the drinking vessels unearthed from the 2,700-year-old tomb of King Midas, which were analyzed and found to contain ingredients used in this brew. A cross between beer, wine and mead, it's made with barley, white Muscat grapes and honey. In keeping with ancient practices, no hops are used, and this modern version of the ancient Turkish recipe instead bitters the beer with saffron, which adds a floral note and a reddish hue. As it's more sweet than bitter, this beer will appeal to white wine drinkers and beer drinkers who don't like hoppy beer. Midas Touch has won more awards than any other Dogfish Head beer and is available year-round.
