In the heart of Ireland lies the small town of Tullamore in County Offaly.
Like many Irish towns that had their names changed to appease English settlers (Beal Feirste became Belfast for example), Tullamore is derived from the Gaelic for Tulach Mhór or the “big hill” that sits in the middle of town. Its whiskey was first distilled in 1829 and Dew was added to the name, not because of the area’s abundance for evening condensation, but rather for the initials of its general manager in the late 19th century, Daniel E Williams. Their slogan for years was “Give Every Man His Dew.”
Every chap should be so lucky, because this meticulously crafted, smooth whiskey is a treat to drink — be it straight or on ice with a little bit of water to bring out its flavors. As any good Irish whiskey should be, Tullamore Dew is triple distilled (rather than twice as in other countries) and its barley is dried in closed kilns over coal fires, which limits any smoky characteristics and maintains the barley’s natural flavor. The result is a tasty beverage that goes down easy, with a marginal bite and very smooth finish. Even if you’re not a big fan of whiskey, this one is definitely worth a try.
