El Conquistador Resort, A Waldorf Astoria Resort
Championship golf and a Waldorf Astoria spa are highlights at this island resort.
Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, this resort is so massive it contains five "villages" offering various levels of accommodation in guest rooms, suites and villas (up to three bedrooms). The 72-hole golf course was designed by Arthur Hills, and guests can schedule PGA instructors to improve their game. Equally impressive is the resort's private 100-acre island, complete with windsurfing, horseback riding, scuba diving, fishing, strategically-placed hammocks and beach waiters. Moorish and Spanish Colonial-inspired architecture, cobblestones, plazas and fountains give the resort a romantic ambience. At the same time it draws corporate events with 100,000 square feet of flexible space and all the necessary services for high-end conferences (weddings, too).
Accommodations are spacious, with the smallest measuring 500 square feet. The overall room style is beach chic, and the numerous standard amenities include plasma TVs, Ferragamo bath products and terraces or balconies. At the tri-level Waldorf Astoria Spa, treatments incorporate local herbs and plants; along with 25 private treatment rooms, it has a kids' spa, yoga studio and eucalyptus steam room. Along with seven outdoor pools, there is a destination water park on-site. The 23 restaurants, bars and lounges include the signature Chops Steakhouse and La Piccola Fontana for Italian cuisine. For a taste of local seafood, guests should head to Stingray Cafe, and for drinks without ever leaving the pool, they can swim on up to Splash Bar.
