A Parisian legend takes on new life as one of the city's most sumptuous lodgings.
With its first foray into Europe, The Peninsula Hotels group brings a glamorous addition to the luxury hotel scene in the City of Lights. The group invested a great deal of time and money on a late-19th-century Haussmann building that served in the past as a lavish hotel and then an international congress center --- George Gershwin wrote “An American in Paris” while staying here, and the property also hosted the Peace Talks to end the Vietnam War. The façade was hand-restored by 20 stone masons; other original details include Neoclassical paneling, murals and gold leaf finishing. Just steps from the Arc de Triomphe, the hotel offers 200 guest rooms, including 34 suites, the most lavish being the penthouse suite with its own rooftop garden. Accommodations are anything but fussy, with tasteful modern décor and lots of extra treats, from free international calling, free soft mini-bar, free on-demand TV and nail polish dryers in the bathrooms. For pampering, there’s the underground Peninsula Spa with a swimming pool, as well as a house fleet of luxury cars: Rolls-Royces, Mini Coopers and BMWs. Six dining venues include LiLi Cantonese and L’Oiseau Blanc, a rooftop bar and French restaurant with a terrace offering 180°-degree views over the city.
