This motel-like lodge nestled in the heart of Navajoland features simple accommodations for visitors of the scenic American West. A gateway to the famous Canyon de Chelly, Thunderbird Lodge offers day tours of the awe-inspiring scenery of an area rich with history—Native American leader Geronimo was captured there. The all-day tour is eight hours and takes guests sixty miles round trip through Canyon Del Muerto to Mummy Cave and through Canyon de Chelly to Spider Rock. There is also a half day tour that lasts approximately three and a half hours. Rooms are basic and equipped with a TV, shower and comfortable beds. Dining comes in the form of a cafeteria-style restaurant located in the original trading post built in 1896, serving Native American dishes as well as continental cuisine. The lodge also features a gift shop and rug room that offers quality Indian jewelry, crafts and Navajo rugs.
