History-rich Athens includes an old foundry that inspires the name of this boutique hotel.
Capturing the heritage of Athens with some historical buildings that date from the 1800s, The Foundry is located near the University of Georgia and the Classic Center Theater. During the U.S. Civil War, a foundry here made cannon and cast the famed arches that grace the university’s North Campus, not far from the inn. Part of that original building now serves as the ballroom. The inn offers romantic spa packages, including his-and-her options. The 118 rooms include seven suites, some of which are pet designated ($25 charge). Dining includes fine cuisine at the plantation Hoyt House, one of the old buildings, where Sunday brunch features cooked-to-order omelets. The Melting Point is the inn’s music venue --- Athens has long been a major music town --- offering more casual meals for lunch and dinner, along with a good brew selection. The conference center is popular for both meetings and weddings. Athens is best explored by car or you can make special arrangements for tours through the concierge. One of the best tours examines the music side of Athens, where the B-52s, R.E.M. and Widespread Panic all originated.
