The graciousness of 19th-century Augusta is on display at The Partridge Inn.

The Partridge Inn

Originally built in 1836 as a large private residence, this property was expanded by a wealthy Northerner, Morris Partridge, into a hotel in 1892. In subsequent myriad iterations --- growing from two stories to six --- The Partridge Inn became a veritable rabbit's warren of halls and segments. In some suites steps go from the bedroom area to the bath, the result of the many additions over time. Also over time, the hotel has hosted heads of state --- among them President Warren G. Harding --- and captains of industry. Its 148 guest rooms, including 28 suites, present a variety of configurations, again the result of the numerous additions. Many have balconies that provide superb views of the 18th-century city that spills over the landscape toward the canal. Period-style furnishings with king or queen-size beds and 26-inch flat-screen TVs fill the rooms. Desks are generous and well lit. Studio suites come with full kitchens completely equipped for long stays with utensils and dinnerware. Six rooms are ADA compliant. At the top of the hotel an ample ballroom invites cocktail parties or weddings. An on-site dining room takes food seriously, and live music (no cover) plays on Friday (jazz) and Saturday nights. A block away, a park offers a tennis court. From the inn, we recommend you take a walking tour of the fine old Summerville neighborhood and its historic homes.
