An artfully designed boutique hotel in a sexy SoHo setting.
Perhaps The James' emphasis on green got to us. Even the small standard rooms here feel very bring-the-outside-in at this hot boutique hotel. Amenities abound at this specialty hotel. Think everything from complimentary Wi-Fi to complimentary light fare at The James Club. Though The James is one of New York's newer properties, it's felt of the city since the day it opened. Well-known NYC chef David Burke's eponymous restaurant, David Burke Kitchen, and the nicely sceney rooftop bar, Jimmy, get part of the credit. The rest goes to the art collection, culled from local and international artists; the hotel's neighborhood hangout atmosphere; and a swoon-worthy second-floor urban garden. Oh, it also doesn't hurt that The James knew to protect itself from interlopers --- so very NYC! The hotel's air space is clear of external structures so the unobstructed views will never disappear. This pet-friendly hotel has 114 guest rooms in a twenty-story glass-and-stone building. Along with Jimmy, the rooftop offers up a pool-with-a-view that guests will dream about long after they've gone home. As for the credit for all of the great features, the hotel had quite the design team behind it: the main designer worked on the homes of Brad Pitt and Helmut Lang, and the 1,300-square-foot Penthouse Loft complete with views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges is the product of Dutch designer Piet Boon. We especially like the uniforms from British menswear designer Andrew Buckler. His masculine take on the women’s clothing (asymmetry, leather details, a nod to jodhpurs) makes it all the sexier. Guests who need a weekday ride get a taste of eco-luxury in the hotel's complimentary, chauffeur-driven Lexus RX 350H hybrid.
