Distilled Palm Springs chic on a Northwest budget.
Portland has long had cachet, thanks to Gus Van Sant. With its cool but Spartan attitude, this hotel suits the city. Carved out of an old motel, it's simple but appealing, with hints of Palm Springs. Those who can't bear the thought of staying in a Holiday Inn can hunker down on the cheap in Lobu Single, Metropolitan or Deuce Rooms adorned with Blu Dot furnishings (think Ikea), cable TV, complimentary WiFi and blackboard doors. We like the accommodations, although we do find the faux fur pillows and throw blankets a little scary. Splashes of olive and yellow are striking in the otherwise white rooms. Of note is the Doug Fir Restaurant & Lounge; check out a local or national band, stumble back to your room (there are special rates for those who check in after midnight), sleep late, and then soak up that hangover with a Timberline Scramble.
