Oregonians' favorite destination resort.
This planned resort community in Oregon’s high desert offers such a perfect vacation experience that it’s almost Stepford-esque, albeit without the creepiness. The beautifully maintained, pine-scented grounds---with a big nod to preserving the natural landscape---abound with happy, healthy families engaging in recreational activities: golf, tennis, swimming, horseback riding, canoeing, fishing and biking (everyone who stays here does it) from one side of the resort to the other. Whether you want a quiet getaway with your honey or a rousing extended-family reunion, you’ll find accommodation to suit. The Lodge Village offers guest rooms and condos within walking distance to the Sunriver Lodge and Sage Springs Spa. All come with gas fireplaces and private decks. There are also a number of private homes and condos available, which are fully equipped with fireplaces, kitchenware, linens, TVs and VCRs, stereos, washers and dryers, and gas barbecues. No matter where you choose to stay, you’ll have access to all facilities, although most activities cost a few bucks extra. Usually, it’s worth it, given the setting. The resort is situated around three lovely golf courses, with the Deschutes River forming its eastern border. Additional attractions include Sunriver Village, a cluster of businesses and restaurants surrounding a miniature golf/ice skating rink. Beware: it’s usually filled with teens checking each other out. Planned activities range from kiddie day camp to adult cooking and craft classes. There is also a planetarium and nature center, and in the winter, nearby skiing is the big draw.
