Southern Ocean Lodge

Contemporary elegance and coastal beauty create an unforgettable experience at this sea-view lodge.

Southern Ocean Lodge

Upon checking in at the Southern Ocean Lodge on Australia's third largest island, guests can't help but feel a sense of well-being. Simply getting to the lodge from the local airport in Kingscote can take more than an hour, offering a chance to unwind, especially if you stop along the way to discover local wildlife with your driver who does double-duty as a nature guide.

Set on 250 acres, surrounded by coastal national park and perched on a cliff near Hanson Bay, this exclusive lodge might be a little rugged in setting for some, but we think it is ideal for a true getaway. The 21 contemporary, cantilevered suites are a work of art, following the flow of the cliff. They are gorgeous in design, with their modern style and light-filled spaces lined with floor-to-ceiling windows. The dramatic Osprey Pavilion feels like a theater set adorned with custom furnishings, state-of-the-art audio visual system and private plunge pool that unites the interior with the surrounding landscape.

Rates include three gourmet meals per day inclusive of beverages and liquor, island airport transfers and signature guided adventures such as walks among the sea lions at Seal Bay, explorations of local flora, kangaroo viewing and nighttime discovery walks. The natural environment finds its way indoors at the Southern Spa, with ingredients that include local lavender, pink clay, eucalyptus, Ligurian honey and Kangaroo Island mineral salt. While Southern Ocean Lodge is all about getting away, meetings can be accommodated in the lounge and boardroom.

This property is managed by the Baillie Lodges Collection, a company seasoned in remote luxury experiences. Sustainable practices include the use of EcoSmart fireplaces, a preference for local food and drink purveyors, and elevated plank walkways between the lodgings to protect local plant life. Out and about, the island features an impressive lineup of wineries, including a project by the famous Lurton family from Bordeaux, whose wines are all served at the lodge, along with a liquor made from the honey of surviving Ligurian bees. Heirloom tomatoes and local peaches provide intense flavors, and fresh seafood is a highlight, from abalone and lobster to oysters and freshwater crayfish. While a stay at the Southern Ocean Lodge is a splurge, we recommend you put it on your bucket list and promise you this: It won't disappoint.
