Highland Gardens Hotel
A small, residential-style hotel at the base of the Hollywood Hills.
Nestled into the base of the Hollywood Hills, just below the Magic Castle (members only), this is the motel where singer/songwriter Janis Joplin overdosed in 1970. A stylish inn that has since been renamed (which doesn’t keep it off the tour bus routes), it features a lush, tropically landscaped pool courtyard and private tennis court --- the former a welcome respite and the latter a rarity in this raucous neighborhood. Guest rooms and suites could use some updating but offer pleasant views of the courtyard. One suite was created on HGTV's "Design Star" and pays tribute to the hotel's rock 'n' roll heyday. This small property, which caters to entertainment industry tourists, is just a short stroll from the Walk of Fame and the Hollywood and Highland complex, which houses upscale boutiques and the Dolby Theater, home of the Academy Awards. Even though the area is traffic-infested and swarming with bizarre figures of the night, this property is just the place for movie buffs who want to stay in the thick of it.
