Andaz San Diego
One of San Diego's best urban luxury hotels also boasts great nightlife and sushi dining.
Originally the Maryland Hotel (built in 1914), and most recently the Ivy Hotel, this Andaz property is the latest in a string of stylish, luxury Gaslamp Quarter boutique hotels catering to the young, upwardly mobile, fun-loving set. Its transformative design includes glowing agate wall panels that line the entrance and enormous urban art that backs the rear wall. A stay here means pampering, as well as good food and innovative cocktails. With their personal butlers, in-room bottle service and Thai bed linens, the 159 guest rooms seem to anticipate every want or need. Consider splurging on one of the whimsically themed suites such as the two-bedroom Sweet Suite with soaking tub and gargantuan shower; the Cabana Suite that adjoins the pool and sports an in-room spiral staircase; or the sexy Star Suite with king-size bunk beds, a central, glass shower that turns opaque upon use and --- gasp! --- a stripper pole. Although the rooms are small, service is top-notch, as are the on-site nightclub and rooftop pool. This hotel draws a crowd at night for clubbing, which means guests can dine on excellent food, dance the night away and sleep in luxury all under the same roof.
