Majestic Hotel Chicago
An urban English manor on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Although it was built in the style of an English manor, this boutique hotel doesn't limit guests to afternoon tea and crumpets. Located in Chicago’s hip Lakeview East neighborhood --- a far cry from the English countryside --- it is surrounded by fun things to do. It’s mere steps from Lake Michigan, for instance, where one can run, walk and bike along lakefront trails, play golf and tennis, or simply watch the boats in Belmont Harbor. Two blocks west, meanwhile, is Wrigley Field, where baseball fans can watch the Chicago Cubs try to lift the notorious curse that was placed on them in 1945 by a local tavern owner. The Lincoln Park Zoo, along with a smattering of downtown attractions, is a short bus, train or cab ride away. Even more impressive than its central location, however, is the fact that the hotel maintains a quiet, comfortable vibe in spite of it. Built in the 1920s, it feels like a romantic European inn thanks to the wood paneling and wood-burning fireplace in the lobby, 24-hour coffee and tea service, and British colonial-inspired furnishings in the guest rooms, which are small but have plenty of modern amenities, including robes, complimentary wireless Internet, flat-screen TVs and fully stocked mini-bars. Although it lacks a fitness center, the hotel offers complimentary access to a nearby health club for anyone who wants to work off the fresh-baked cookies that are served daily from 4 to 6 p.m.
