A Gold Coast gem updated by über hotelier Ian Schrager.
A member of the Historic Hotels of America, this property served as a setting in Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller, “North by Northwest.” These days, its new role is to redefine not only Chicago’s hotel scene, but the boutique hotel world --- at least, that’s what hotelier Ian Schrager set out to do when he took over. The idea is to combine simple sophistication with functionality and more importantly, value. Guest room style has been notched up, offering a sleek and soothing ambience. Fortunately, the legendary Pump Room remains, reinvented, of course, and serving farm-to-table flavors from Jean-Georges Vongerichten. After hours, the restaurant becomes a bar with a DJ, tapas-style dishes and a resident mixologist. The hotel also houses the Library & Coffee Bar, recalling classic coffee houses of yore. Though the concept for this hotel is about getting back to basics, basics have certainly changed over time --- for example, you’ll find an on-site screening room and express room service that includes gourmet dishes.
