This hotel helped inaugurate Portland's transformation into a low-key hipster haven.
Ever since this classic hotel was refurbished, the proprietors have dared to be different. It may be near several other downtown lodgings, but it set the city's hip hotel pace by catering to ironic Gen X-ers and arty boomers who appreciate digs with a sense of humor. The unassuming, nine-story, brick building houses more than 100 rooms done in clean décor with original photography by Pulitzer Prize winner David Hume Kennerly and nice extras, including robes, pillowtop mattresses and pillow menus. We also love the fun eccentricities like the Get it Now! button on the phone for room service and more. House restaurant Imperial focuses on regional ingredients, while the nightly (free) Craft Beer Hour showcases local brews.
