Turtle Inn

This Coppola-owned property gives guests the chance to live the high life in Belize.

Turtle Bay hammock and beachscape

With inviting blue waters, white sand beaches, coral cayes and lush foliage, guests might think they’ve discovered a little slice of tropical heaven on earth here in Belize. Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and his wife Eleanor have owned this sumptuous waterfront resort since 2001. Among the 25 accommodations, guests can choose from well-appointed thatched-roof cottages and villas just steps from the beach, all furnished in island style with Balinese décor, ceiling fans and private decks, as well as Illy coffee makers, yoga mats and organic bath products.

If you can tear yourself away from these idyllic digs, it’s only a quick walk or bike ride to explore Placencia, a quaint Creole fishing village nearby. Back at the resort, a dive shop oversees sailboat and kayak rentals. After a day spent relaxing by one of two infinity pools or snorkeling the Belize reef, keep the laid-back glow going with a Thai massage or body treatment at the on-site Sunset Spa. The half dozen dining options highlight fresh local seafood; make sure to check out the “wine aquarium,” the largest collection in Central America (Coppola is also a renowned northern California wine producer).
