Castello Della Castelluccia
Ancient ruins, historic architecture and restless ghosts welcome guests at this castle hideaway just outside Rome.
Atop the ruins of an ancient Roman villa, this 23-room hotel was built between the 10th and 13th centuries. It has been inhabited by noble families over the years, and today offers an aristocratic atmosphere for modern travelers. The guest rooms are lavish in style, with jewel-toned fabrics, four-poster beds, trussed ceilings and ornate furnishings. Hydro Deluxe rooms are especially appealing with their majolica tile hydromassage tubs, and the 3-level La Torre Suite is suited for romance, with a fireplace, Franciscan-style bed and setting in the ancient section of the castle.
Medieval in style, house restaurant Locanda shines a light on Umbrian cuisine, while the terraces offer a picturesque setting for aperitifs and cocktails. In front of the Chapel of St. Barbara, the Terrace of the Magnolias is a favorite with its view over the Garden of the Orange Trees. The hotel has a wellness area available for private guest use, as well as a pretty (seasonal) swimming pool surrounded by palms and cedar trees. Of note are the surrounding golf courses and, closer to home, the resident ghosts, including Nero who is said to wander over from his nearby tomb.
