Unexpected old-fashioned style in a convenient airport hotel.
Quite unlike most run-of-the-mill airport hotels, the Copthorne is built around an old sixteenth-century farmhouse and set in 100 acres of gardens and woods. And yet it's just six minutes from the runways. In keeping with its origins, log fires and oak beams grace the public rooms, and many bedrooms are done in traditional style, again beamed and with four-poster beds. Rooms are fitted with the basics of tea-and-coffee making facilities, a trouser press and a TV with pay-per-view movies; beds are plain white with a splash of color from a few adorning cushions. It's no more and no less than a corporate guest with an early flight would need. Special-access rooms are available, and there are four banquet suites for business use. The Connoisseur Wing rooms provide a little extra luxury, such as bathrooms with corner spa baths. Guests have a choice between formal dining at the Lion d'Or, or informal meals at the Brasserie, the Library Bar and Lounge or the White Swan Pub. For more active guests there is a croquet lawn and a jogging track, as well as golf and horseback riding available on request. The health club, located outside the hotel, includes a pool and squash courts.
