Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park London

This sumptuous, historic hotel showcases a legacy of pampering and high style.

Since the Mandarin Oriental group took over the Hyde Park Hotel, it has undertaken a series of major refurbishments, which have brought the property comfortably into the 21st century. The building began as gentlemen's apartments in 1892 and became a hotel in 1908, and like all grand hotels, it's had its fair share of visiting celebrities, including Rudolph Valentino, who brought the whole of Knightsbridge to a halt when he appeared on the balcony. Contemporary celebrities have included the three world-famous tenors, as well as film stars. This splendid red-brick structure faces Harvey Nichols department store and is very close to Sloane Street and Harrods. The bedrooms at the back have a wonderful view over Hyde Park itself. Suites also have uninterrupted views across Hyde Park, and all rooms feature Bang & Olufsen flat screens TVs, Wi-Fi and iPod docking stations. For lovers of culinary ingenuity, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal (the pioneer of playing around with food) offers guests the chance to try experimental cuisine such as Meat Fruit, a chicken liver parfait presented as a perfect Mandarin fruit --- and all without having to trek to Blumenthal's flagship restaurant in Bray.
