The Bermondsey Square Hotel
Funky, sixties-inspired luxury at surprisingly reasonable rates.
Bermondsey isn’t the first place that springs to mind for boutique hotels and hot tubs, but this blip on the map is a lovely surprise. A manageable walk from London Bridge and the South Bank, it’s a preferable option for guests looking for a bit of space away from the crowds. This trendy retro hotel has 60 deluxe rooms, fifteen club rooms and five loft suites (named Lucy, Lily, Ruby, Jude and Eleanor, after 1960s hits). At their most basic, rooms are large, bright and fitted with "Mad Men"-style lamps, quilted leather furniture, Apple iMacs with free Wi-Fi and plenty of artwork on the walls. Squishy high beds guarantee an incredible sleep, but if you’re up for a big night out instead, head down to Alfie’s Bar & Kitchen. Crowds pack in here at night, jostling for spots on the red leather stools or lounging in the bubble chair that looks like a giant goldfish bowl on its side. Food errs on the pricier end, but service is excellent and staff are efficient and ever-smiling. If you’ve booked one of the lofts, which range from breezy beige-and-white to leopard-print sofas and curtains studded with diamante bling, take advantage of the hot tub on the deck, which is neatly hidden away from prying eyes.
