Quirky pan-Asian-themed rooms in very English hotel.
Two elegant, six-story Victorian terrace houses have melded together into an eclectic hotel that serves as a magnet for visiting rock and movie stars. The cabin rooms are very small but inexpensive, and other rooms have individual décor, some with delightful floor-to-ceiling windows and one with a Moroccan theme. Beds range from circular and regal four-poster to half-tester and ship bunk. Four bedrooms have enormous Victorian bathing machines with intricate brass pipework and glass screens. The Colonial Suite, also known as Charlie's Room (it's dedicated to the Prince of Wales), is all British Raj, with Indian furniture, a ceiling fan and an empire bed. The Japanese Water Garden Suite features lots of jade, a Buddha and a cedar wood conservatory. One attic room with sloping ceilings boasts a mirror over the bed, which perhaps explains why the Portobello is sometimes described as a sexy hotel. Not far from Portobello Market, this property is also a short, pleasant walk to Kensington Gardens and Holland Park. Extra touches include goose-down duvets and 24-hour breakfasts. The informal restaurant/bar is open round the clock. The owners also run the extremely popular Julie's restaurant and wine bar on nearby Portland Road.
