The Royal Horseguards

Grand Victorian Gothic building that exudes a club-like feel.

Between Whitehall and the River Thames, this stately building (once the home of the National Liberal Club) still retains a private feel with a discreet rear entrance. All 280 rooms are of decent size and well-equipped with iPod docking stations, power showers and surround sound, with plasma televisions in both the bedrooms and bathrooms. Wi-Fi is complimentary throughout the building. Executive rooms are large and decorated with oak furniture and colorful chintz and have mini-bars, air-conditioning and marble bathrooms; some also have wonderful views. The Library Suite is, as it sounds, all leather, chenille and silk; the Egyptian Suite has a suitable black-and-gold color scheme. Both have private cloakrooms and marble and ebony bathrooms. There’s a pretty lounge with chandeliers and paintings, thoroughly in keeping with the general ambience of this classic hotel. The One Twenty One Two restaurant has a separate entrance and a modern, bright feel. The menu offers a European/Asian mix as well as old British favorites. On summer afternoons, light meals are served in the Garden Terrace. Conference facilities for up to 250 people are available in sumptuous One Whitehall Place, which adjoins the hotel.
