Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge

Attractive mountain style underlies the casual luxury at this all-season lodge.

The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is situated amid the natural splendor of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This gorgeous area along the shores of Lac Beauvert has hosted visitors since at least as far back as 1915, when the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway pitched 10 luxury tents for guests. This "Tent City" evolved into a camp of cabins in 1921 and continued building and expanding over the decades into the impressive resort it is today.

Accommodations at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge may still include log cabins, but this is no rustic retreat. Guests will find a full-service spa with therapeutic mineral baths and fairways designed by Canada's master golf course architect, Stanley Thompson. The 18-hole, par-71 course was built in 1925 and follows the natural contours of the surrounding forest, winding past glacial-fed lakes through a wildlife corridor that is home to caribou, elk, bears and wolves.

After putting for par on holes positioned for dramatic views of the snow-capped mountains, players can head to The Moose's Nook Chophouse for a hearty meal in front of a roaring fire. Also on offer in-house are ORSO Trattoria, serving casual, healthy fare influenced by the flavors of northern Italy, and Oka Sushi, presenting fresh sushi. Guest rooms and suites have a modern mountain lodge feel and come equipped with cable TV, coffee makers, kettles and mini-fridges. Accommodating up to 600 people, the hotel's meeting and event venues include a historic ballroom.

For added space and luxury, the Signature Cabins feature full kitchens and private settings. The Outlook Cabin is reported to be the honeymoon destination for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The 6,000-square-foot cabin, which was painstakingly rebuilt in 2000 after a fire destroyed the original 1930 structure, is known as "The Royal Retreat" as it hosted King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939, and Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 2005. There are six bedrooms, six bathrooms, two stone fireplaces, kitchen, dining room, great room, veranda and conservatory.
