Not Versailles, but an elegant hotel on Sherbrooke street nonetheless.
Situated on the cosmopolitan Sherbrooke street west, this hotel is steps from Montréal’s Fine Arts Museum, McGill University and the myriad downtown shops and restaurants located in the shadow of the looming Mont Royal. Guestrooms are simple, elegant and sumptuous. Standard rooms are medium-sized and colors and furnishings are paired intelligently. Mahogany wood, plush pillows, marble bathrooms and a smart, subdued décor all give guestrooms a luxurious ambiance without veering over the top. It should be added, though, that standard rooms lack creativity and originality. The innate simplicity of standard rooms can be a bit boring; solid blue and green comforters and patterned carpeting could use a bit of flair. Nevertheless, that same stoic simplicity is what often attracts the older couples and business people that frequent the hotel. Some of the hotel’s high-end suites were planned by the designer Stephanie Kouri and the extra attention to detail shows in her more daring palette. The Méridien’s staff is eager to please, offering everything from a friendly recommendation to arranging child care.
