Hostel aficionados will appreciate the unique experience offered in this 150-year-old former jail.
The old Carleton County Gaol boasts the last working gallows in Canada, as well as hostel rooms in authentic, original jail cells. Most are dorm-style rooms, but brave souls can book the 3'x9' cell for a solitary experience. A few standard hotel rooms are also available, and unprison-like perks include free breakfast with fair trade coffee, bagels, eggs, locally sourced fruit and more. Those who stay overnight are treated to a tour of the jail. For socializing with fellow "inmates", guests-only Mugshots bar serves local beers beneath aforementioned gallows. The hostel is in a great downtown location, walking distance to Byward Market, Parliament Hill and the National Gallery of Canada.
