Hacienda Los Andes

Simple pleasures are the highlight here, from star-gazing to overnight camping trips by horseback.

Haciendas were introduced to South America by the Spaniards and are now an integral part of the continent's culture. In a scenic river valley surrounded by mountains, Hacienda Los Andes combines colonial tradition with uniquely indigenous influences. This 1,200-acre spread reaches from the Rio Hurtado to the top of the Cerro Gigante Mountains, and it has its own observatory offering visual tours and astrophotography. The majority of the land is a nature reserve, which makes it ideal for leisurely rides on criollo horses (a breed native to South America) that have been gently trained without the use of whips or spurs. Among the activities are multi-day tours, which include overnight camping along the riding trails. The hacienda has seven quaint bedrooms, each looking onto the mountains. Meals incorporate Chilean wines, as well as fruit, vegetables and cheese from local producers.
