Kaleidoscope Inn & Gardens
A romantic country retreat inland from the coast.
Inhabiting a 19th-century Victorian farmhouse, this out-of-the-way inn is on a residential side street far removed from busy Hwy. 101 between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara's wine country. The owners' motto is, "We love to spoil you," and it's certainly a fine choice for small weddings or anniversary retreats. Relax on the wraparound porch with a cup of tea, play croquet in the garden, or have a candle-lit dinner in gazebo. The guest rooms are all gorgeous, high-ceilinged abodes with refinished hardwood floors and stained-glass accented windows. All come with private bathrooms, radios with CD players, and superb mattresses with comfy quilts and linens, but no TVs or telephones. The Lovers' Nest has corner windows to let in lots of sunlight, a king sleigh bed, and some antique touches. Note that all of the rooms are on the second floor, reached via a stairway. Out back is a stone cottage, which has plenty of old-fashioned country charm. Full hot breakfasts often feature local produce, such as apple pancakes. There's a library with a TV and VCR player, too. The personable hosts are full of suggestions for outdoor activities, oceanfront drives, wine-tasting tours, and more.
